10 Ways Turn Your Legal Website Into A Rainmaker

You must pay attention to search engine optimization (SEO). This is the sum of all your website’s parts and will get your website noticed by the search engines, Google being the prime one, and get your website ranked high so that users are directed to it when searching for a lawyer. The importance of site ranking cannot be emphasized enough. Clients rarely go beyond the first three pages returned in a search and usually look only at the results on the first page. They instinctively believe that a higher ranked website (nearer to the top of the search engines results page) is a better firm. Law firms are among the most searched for professionals on the internet so the competition is fierce and yet if your website is not highly ranked it will not be seen by prospective clients. That is search ranking is important.

There is no SEO recipe anyone can provide to ensure your website will appear higher in the search rankings. Research, testing and unremitting hard work will deliver the desired results. SEO is an art as well as a science. It is preferable to enlist the services of a reputable search engine specialist to assist you, especially with the technical aspects of SEO. The good news is that many aspects of SEO can be instituted by anyone who manages a site’s content. Here are some areas that can be addressed especially in the beginning stages of creating a website.

1 Make your website specialized. For example, it is preferable to have a site devoted to Chicago divorce law than one devoted to Illinois legal services generally. Settle on keywords or keyword phrases for each page. Be specific and avoid being generic. It pays to be geographically specific when it comes to a legal website as users tend to search for lawyers in their area.

2 Consider creating a number of mini-sites with highly specialized content than a single large, amorphous site that tries to address all aspects of the firm.

3 Give your legal practice website a unique name unrelated to the name of the firm. This is because the names of law firms often change when partners change. The name of the website could relate to the specific target market being addressed by the website or mini-site e.g. Miami real estate, Seattle personal injury, Huston criminal lawyer, Atlanta tax attorney.

4 The website design should suit the target demographic. A legal website dealing with estate planning is obviously for prosperous over-forties while a website about real estate law should have wide appeal.

5 Make sure a legal website is legal! There are different limitations in each state on the advertising of legal services, and some states allow verdicts to be used on websites while others firmly forbid it. Make sure you meet the online requirements in your home state.

6 Keep the content on your website fresh and relevant. It is important to Google that you update your site regularly and just as important to your clients. The web page copy should be checked regularly for accuracy and relevance and fresh articles should be added.

7 Consider adding a blog connected to your website but only if you know it will be monitored, updated and contributed to daily or several times a week. If you cannot guarantee that then rather do not have a blog. Whether you have a blog or not, contribute to other legal blogs and forums, with links to your website in your posts. Post articles about your field of expertise on article websites and elsewhere, again including links to your website. These allow clients to follow the link and links to your websites help to raise your website in the Google page ranks.

8 Add online press releases to your website after distributing them through PRWeb or similar public relations services.

9 Write an e-book and give it away on your website. It need not be a long and complicated book. All you ask in return is for the client to sign up to download the product. That counts as a valuable business lead. It can also serve as an opt-in sign up to receive your newsletter. Receiving regular newsletters will place your firm at the top of the client’s mind.

10 Hire an SEO specialist to work on all aspects of your website to improve your page ranking. It will be money well spent.
