Blogging - Love Your Subject!

By: Jroxman

How many people do you know who has a blog of their own? The chances are, quite a few! It seems every man, woman and their dog have a blog, and who could argue? Blogs are a great (and in Blogger’s case, free) way to publish online. People blog for all different types of reasons, such as:

- Expressing their thoughts, ideas and views on different topics;
- Keeping in touch with friends and relatives;
- Keeping their readers up to date with new developments;
- Earning an income, from a few cents a day right through to several thousands of dollars a month (I barely fall into the former bracket…)

All of these different reasons for blogging have a common denominator – bloggers generally enjoy writing in their blog. If you didn’t enjoy the subject upon which you’re blogging, then what’s the point? And in the case of reason number 4, this is, in my opinion, the single most important factor.

If you plan on creating a blog with the sole intention of generating an income from it, then you had better choose your niche wisely! For example, if you created a blog based on the profitability factor of the subject matter, then you’d better be prepared to slog it out at times, as if you’ve no interest in the subject, you will very soon get bored of it and run out of ideas to post. If you want your blog to be a long-term entity, then choose a subject which genuinely interests you. If you’re really captivated by a subject, then you naturally think about it a lot, which will lead to great ideas which you can then post in your blog. And one thing which the readers of your blog love is great content!

I decided to create a blog around the subject of creating traffic to my blog (you could call it a ‘meta-blog’!!). The reason I chose this subject is because I’m absolutely fascinated with the hundreds (thousands?) of different factors involved in generating blog traffic. I’ve always loved using computers as well, so I’m at my happiest when I’m plonked in front of a computer screen!

I’m also excited about the future development of my blog, which could take any number of different roads based on the decisions I make. The success of my blog depends entirely on my decisions, and my decisions alone. No pressure then!!

Like I said previously, I love the subject upon which I am writing, and I feel this will give my blog a better-than-average chance of success. I feel that I could write hundreds of different posts for my blog, and it’s a real challenge to stay at work when I could be at home blogging and nurturing my blog!

Bottom line? I love the subject I am blogging about, and I think this is the single most crucial factor in giving your blog genuine staying-power.
