Find Your Personal Greek Paradise

By: Isla Campbell

Birthplace of the Olympics and home to fantastic myths, legends and ancient history, mainland Greece and its numerous beautiful islands have been popular with British tourists ever since the onset of mass air travel in the 1960s; many returning year after year to revel in the sun, sea and warmth of the locals.

But it is the sheer diversity of the country that attracts many visitors. From cultural city breaks in Athens - the birthplace of democracy - to secluded mountain hideaways, Greece has much to offer. Of course, if you prefer a two-week break next to a beautiful beach in five star luxury, that too is freely available; or perhaps you’d like to embark on an adventurous and extended island hopping holiday around the many stunning Greek Islands; those holidays too are easy to find.

On mainland Greece the most visited area of Halkidiki is situated in the north east of the country, but further south the beautiful Peloponnese, littered with many unspoilt traditional villages and home to the birthplace of the Olympics, Olympia also attracts many visitors. Often described as the ‘true Greece’ this area also has some of the country’s most beautiful beaches.

But, for a real taste of Greece try Parga on the west coast which is still largely undiscovered by mass tourism. Further north, amongst the pines and olive trees lies Sivota, which is truly one of the most unspoilt resorts in the whole of Greece. For a cultural city break try Athens, a city of 11million which is dominated by the ancient Parthenon and simply offers far too many cultural delights to be enjoyed in a two-week break.

And of course, Greek Island holidays are also extremely popular, whether travelling amongst them or choosing one on which to stay for an entire holiday. The largest is Crete, to the south of the mainland and off the west coast of Greece lie the Ionian Islands which include Corfu, Zante, Kefalonia, Paxos, Lefkada, and Ithaca - home of the great Greek warrior, King and hero of the Trojan Wars, Ulysses. As well as being mountainous and covered in lush green cypresses and olive trees, they also boast great beaches.

All over, Greece hotels vary from the small family-run pension to five star luxury but all are sure to give you a warm welcome and treat you as a part of the extended family. You will find many examples of pension accommodation throughout the Greek Islands.

Other large well-known Greek Islands include Kos and Rhodes, whose port entrance in ancient times was straddled by the mighty Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, both of which are part of the Dodecanese archipelago found at the most eastern point of the Aegean.

South-east of the mainland are the mountainous Cyclades Islands which include the popular destinations of Santorini and Mykonos; featuring bright white houses seemingly perched precariously on top of sheer cliffs. Finally, the islands of the Sporades, to the east of the mainland, boast well-known destinations such as Skiathos and Skopelos.

If Greece is on your holiday agenda the hardest part will definitely be to choose where to go, but remember you can go back, time and time again!
