Food banks help hurricane stricken areas

By: JasonB

The Mid-Michigan Food Bank a member of Feeding AmericaTM stands ready to help neighboring food banks in the network to aid hurricane victims before and after the devastating weather. In the wake of Hurricane Gustav, many Louisiana parishes and cities including Baton Rouge and New Orleans are in urgent need of funds to provide food, water and cleaning supplies to tens of thousands of residents still reeling in the aftermath of the storm.

Working quietly in the background, Feeding America has spent more than $600,000 on Gustav relief efforts to date. More than 100 truckloads of food are en route or have arrived at Feeding America food banks along the Gulf Coast since Gustav hit on September 1. The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and the Second Harvest Food Bank of New Orleans and Acadiana estimate that the need for emergency food and water throughout Louisiana will remain great for the next four to six weeks.

Water, Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) and other supplies placed in high-risk areas well before the start of hurricane season are being used for recovery efforts but need to be replenished for future storms.

Right now, disaster-relief expenses for the Feeding America network remain at $1 million (estimated). The devastation that will be left in the wake of Hurricane Ike is expected to push expenses much higher. Since hurricane season began, Feeding America has stepped up in a phenomenal way, helping their own communities and other network members with disaster response and recovery.
