Get Your Company Noticed – Design Your Own Business Cards

By: John Oberhauser

With the right ideas, you can make your own business cards; it's not hard, and it can even be fun. We're going to reveal some secrets to getting yourself noticed with your cards. Business cards may not look like much, but they are one of your most powerful business tools.

It is important for your business cards to explain what your business is about while still being succinct. People often try to put every possible piece of information on their cards. In actuality, that probably isn't the best way to go about it.

You should treat your cards like any piece of advertising, targeting a particular audience. In most cases, people use cards to provide contact information. There are other cases, however. You may want to include contact information for the overall business. For instance, in the case of an online business, you may only want to include contact information such as URLs, telephone numbers, and email addresses. The best design is often the simplest design.

Printing your own cards also allows you to create small batches for specific needs. At a minimum, your business cards should include your name and the name of your company. You should also think about some other possible pieces of information to include.

Address - Although many people put their address on their card, it is not necessary if your contacts do not come to you physically. If there is no need for a customer to have your address, you might want to use that space for something else.

Contact Methods – These depend on how your clients communicate with you. You might include a telephone number, an email address, or a physical address. Do not include any contact methods that you do not want a potential customer using.

Web URL - This is a key piece of information, as is your email address. Potential customers will have an additional way to contact you, and also a way to find out more about your business.

Job Title - You may want to use this if differentiating roles within the company is important or just to give the sense that the company is large and thriving.

Logo - A distinct logo can create brand loyalty and help develop your business identity. Your logo may not fit well on a business card, however. You can create a striking design by using the logo as a background or a bleeding it off the edge of the card. You could also remove it altogether and just use the color scheme of your logo.

Tagline - This can help clients identify you, especially when your company name doesn't make your product or service clear. You should choose a tagline that clearly states what you do.

Once you decide what information will be included on your card, you can decide what stock you want to use. The more information you put on your card, the less space that is available for designs, so take that into consideration when making your choice of graphic elements and text.

There are many color schemes and images available on pre-printed cards. You can find everything from flowers to images of corporate success. Pick a design that will bring your products and services to mind. Decide what sort of personality your cards should suggest; it might be laid back and fun or elegant and professional. You should use a simple, readable text.

Business cards are one of your most powerful business tools. Create the strongest design possible, and use this tool to your greatest advantage.
