What is a HD television?

HD stands for high definition. HD televisions provide viewers with the sharpest, most detailed picture quality available. The resolution of an HD television is dramatically higher than that of an analogue television. A true HD television has a minimum of 1280 x 720 pixels, whereas an analogue TV has a resolution of approximately 512 x 400 pixels. It is this higher level of resolution that translates into a more crisp and clear picture.

Another difference is that HD televisions offer a wider format, which makes for a theatre-like viewing experience. When watching a widescreen movie on a regular television set, you'll notice black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. These black bars are the result of "letterboxing," the process used to display a movie shot in widescreen on a regular TV. Because HD televisions have an aspect ratio of 16:9, letterboxing is not necessary, which means no more black bars.

Any television set can display a program that's broadcast in high definition. However, you need an HD television in order to actually experience the level of quality being delivered. On a regular TV, an HD program will look the same as a non-HD program. Most cable channels with HD programming broadcast in 720p. HD televisions come in several different levels of resolution, including 480p, 720p and 1080p, with 720p being the most common.

What is the difference between HD televisions and LCD televisions?

LCD stands for liquid crystal display. These televisions get their name from the technology employed to create the image that's projected onto the television screen. Liquid crystals are sandwiched between two sheets of glass. Light is shone through the crystals, and an electrical current running through them determines whether or not a given crystal will block the light or let it pass through. This pattern of lit and unlit crystals is what creates the picture.

LCD, then, is a type of display. When it comes to HD televisions, you can actually choose from among many different types of displays. For example, HD televisions come in plasma, direct view, rear screen and front screen projection. What makes a television an HD television is the fact that it meets the standards required to receive high definition television signals.
