How bad could GAD hit a victim?

By: Robert D. Thomson

Sorrow, fear and an uneasy state of mind are part of of everyday routine of huge number of anxiety disorders victims from all around the Planet. Normal fear and anxiety are an essential part of human life. They help us to escape unpleasant and threatening situations and therefore have warning or adaptive role.

The fear is every time related to some particular object or a situation and anxiety is an indeterminate moving experience. The menace in Generalized Anxiety Disorder is less visible, unclear, therefore it is usually explained as a floating fear. When the fears, worries and anxiety start to dominate and control patients life, when they start to severely interfere with their home, social and business activities, then we can say that the individual certainly suffers from an anxiety disorder.

Psychological symptoms of anxiety disorders are irrational fear and trembling, feeling of constant stress or internal turmoil, hard to concentrate. The sufferer gets agitated very easily and can become extremely sensitive to noise. Also, in most cases anxiety disorder victims develop insomnia (they have great difficulties to have a rest, they wake up many times during the night and might have frightening dreams during their rest time.)

The most recognizable physical symptoms of anxiety disorders are: palpitations or skipping heart beats, feeling problems swallowing, dry mouth, problems with breathing (lack of air), chest pain, frequent need to go to the toilet, weakened sexual desire, noise in ears, pins and needles in fingers and toes, trembling hands and many more, depending on the individuals.

Anxiety disorders could be divided in 7 main categories: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder also called Social Phobia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Specific Phobia and Agoraphobia.

The main characteristics of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are: constant unreasonable worries, anxiety, fear and expectations of something horrible that might happen, which occur most of the days in a period of minimum 2-6 months. The victims find uneasy to put under control their worries which are in great measure exaggerated taking into account the situation. Adult patients suffering from GAD mostly worry about everyday situations, the responsibilities in the workplace, finances, family wellbeing, unpleasant things that might happen to their children, family members, close friends etc.
Irrational fear completely overwhelms the patients and forces them to feel paralyzed, hopeless and unsecure.

Generally, GAD is mostly treated by blend of psychotherapy (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) and pills. Drugs mostly used are Antidepressants from the group of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and at the start of the therapy Benzodiazepines. Some medication free treatments and methods developed by former sufferers are also showing impressive results and can be obtained on the internet.
