How to Use Frame Control To Your Advantage in Hypnosis

By: Andy Bloom

Controlling frames is a very important hypnosis skill to learn and refine because it is extremely powerful. This is one of the most important concepts to grasp and apply to your subject.

In one way to control the frames of various interactions is to take control of the interactions themselves. There are different ways in which you can control and manipulate frames. There are essentially four options you have, to maintain your frame, preframe, reframe and deframe. Of the four framing options maintaining your frame and preframing are the most important and powerful in Conversational Hypnosis.

Choose maintaining your frame as your first option to exercise. To do so you will have to arm yourself with non-reaction. This means to act as if the frame that your hypnotic subject believes just doesn't exist, and this will cause them to doubt their own frame, and place more value on yours.

By ignoring the fact that their frame is of consideration will cause insecurities in their own frame and reinforce your stance.

Preframing takes a bit more calculation and thought than maintaining your frame. If you can imply and assume then many times your frame will be taken at your word as the unconscious usually registers assumptions and implications as truth.

The next technique in framing is the reframe. Shed a positive light on a frame that was being viewed negatively by a person. A context reframe is when you change the context that the frame is placed in.

The final way in which you will control and manipulate frames is by deframing. This is the act of turning the tables on the person who is objecting to your frame. All you have to do is switch roles, and become the challenger. If a challenge is raised to your frame, then instead of trying to explain it, you simply challenge the frame the subject is in.

Be careful with deframing though, because if you do not maintain a light or positive attitude towards your subject, he or she may see you as aggressive or negative, and this will cause distrust and unease with your suggestions.
