How to get audio transcribed

By: Matt Bacak

If you offer audio or teleseminars on your website it’s a good idea to have the transcribed audio available on your website for those who were not on the call or for those who would like a written copy. It’s convenient especially if they want to take notes and have it available for themselves for future reference. I typically use a transcription service off of Elance to take care of all my transcribing needs. Actually, the winning bidder usually ends up being a specific person. To give you an idea of what I do is I go on Elance and say, “I have a one hour and 32 minute audio that I need transcribed word for word. It needs to be single-spaced paragraphs with double spaces between the paragraphs. The audio is on my server”
Then, what I do is get the audio that I have recorded and if it’s on my computer I’ll upload it through FileZilla or upload it to the internet, FTP it up to let’s say PromotingTips.com/audio.mp3 and have the person that I hire take that audio from there.
In my ad I’ll say, “This is a simple and easy task for anyone that knows what they’re doing. English must be your first language – American English. Heck, you get a free lesson while you listen to this. In fact, you’re going to benefit there. The audio is on my website. You download it, you transcribe it and then you send it to me in an MS Word document. It needs to be finished and in my hands no later than Monday, January 13, 2008, at 11:59 pm EST. I’ll give you the link once I choose the winning bid.” So I’m very clear on when I want it and at that moment I’ll have people start bidding on this project and typically what I pay is about $20 per audio hour. This is how you too should word your ads to ensure all of the details are there for your transcriber.
The project name that I posted was, “Need audio transcribed fast.” And then I put the bid on there to get the process going. The one thing I do when I am posting a project on Elance is when it asks, “How much money have I budgeted for this? I put, “Not sure.” Why do I do that? Well, the reason I do that is because I don’t want to help make somebody’s mind up on how much to charge me. I want them to decide how much money it’s worth to them to do the transcription.
So, let’s say I said, “Oh, I’m willing to pay 100 bucks or $200,” then I would’ve potentially lost out on some money. By saying “Not sure”, I will get some idea of what the market’s willing to bear at that time to do the transcription. Get to know your market and have them dictate what price you should pay so you don’t short-change yourself.
Amongst the people that bid, you’ll have people with feedback and reviews. Some will have 100% positive feedback and reviews, plus they’re certified as well. This is the best because you’ll also get some that have 100% positive feedback but have zero reviews. So, I do put a lot of weight on that when I am choosing bids. I also look at how much money they’ve made through Elance to give me more of a general idea of who is good and who isn’t.
If you’re considering using a freelancing service like Elance to transcribe your audio files, I highly suggest you use the tips I’ve just given to ensure you get the best person for the least amount of money.
