Humidifier Information: How Does a Humidifier Work?

By: Peter Garant

A humidifier is a home piece of equipment made to raise the level of air moisture inside. To answer the question - How does a humidifier work? to begin with we need to know what it is used for.

In areas of the world where there is 4 seasons, the cold weather can be uncomfortable due to the amount of water vapor in the air. Humidity is a measure of that water vapor in the air. When the amount of humidity is high, it represents the air is already holding a bunch of water and can not absorb more. Thus we don’t sweat and one feels hotter than it actually is. However when humidity is lower, it represents the air can absorb more moisture in, so one sweats faster and the air sucks in the water vapor. As a result one feels cooler than we actually are.

Neither of these extremes is wanted. At low humidity, one could suffer from epidermal dryness and the temperature would seem to drop. Wooden furniture may also need repair as the dryness will make them shrink and crack. To bypass this hazard, a humidifier can be used to artificially raise humidity.

So then, how does a humidifier function? Well, basically it pumps water into the air so that the humidity level will increase. When the humidity is raised, water can’t turn into vapor. Moisture in our bodies and in objects will then raise and one feels warmer.

There are various types of humidifiers. So, how does a humidifier function? It varies on what type it is.

Evaporation.

This kind of humidifier has 2 main parts: a fan and a wet base. The fan blows air over a wet area. The air then moves the water vapor along with it and spreads it across the area. If one utilizes a humidifier of this kind, make sure you keep the wet pad clean to steer clear of bacterial contamination.

Steam or Vaporizers.

A vaporizer adds water vapor to the air via expelling steam. It has a container where water is boiled and then expelled. Any residue minerals are remain when the water evaporates. The benefit of this type of humidifier is it kills bacteria during the boiling process, so it is not as dirty.

Warm Mist.

This humidifier is basically identical as a vaporizer. However prior to blowing steam into an area, the system cools it down first. The result is therefore warm misty air.

Cool Mist

A cool mist humidifier works by dispersing water droplets into the air. Obviously this is only as sterile as the water which is put into it, since the liquid is not boiled.

Ultrasonic

This humidifier uses high-frequency sound waves to break up and expel tiny water droplets into a room. Most bacteria is destroyed during the procedure, but not all.

It is a good thing to know how a humidifier works. The operation of a humidifier may allow one be more comfortable during winter. They will also help humidity-sensitive perishables; for example wood, wine and cigars to last longer. Pick the right type for your house and enjoy a warmer winter.
