Hydraulic Shears – The Basics

The process of shearing involves applying a high pressure tool through a metal plate, thereby removing part of the metal. Examples of shear machines include punching machines, which create small discs, and blanking machines, which create washers and other small items.

Direct tool ordinary machining is different from shear machining. Tools with single or multiple points are used in ordinary tool machining to cut or remove metal from the metal block or sheet. In order to obtain required dimensions, the tool comes in contact with the metal repeatedly. The cutting edge of the tool is used to remove the metal from the plate using shear machining. In order to tear the metal off the plate, maximum pressure is applied to the tool. Only once does the tool touch the metal plate.

Both hydraulic and mechanical machines can perform shear machining. Hydraulic shears can be used to cut and score sheet metal with speed and accuracy. For high volume fabricating factories, they are perfect. In manufacturing operations where a high intensity of pressure is required, hydraulic shears are favored. They are fast, quiet, able to operate continuously, and require little in the way of routine maintenance. Hydraulic shear machines need less space to produce the same pressure as the mechanical shear machines.

The metal that is to be cut is placed inside the hydraulic machine and is secured with clamps so it stays in place while high pressure is applied to it. For those jobs that require a 90 degree cut, a squaring arm or back gauge must be used in order to guarantee that a smooth and even cut is obtained. Grinding is an effective way to remove any minute burrs that may be formed by the edge of the blade. While using hydraulic shears, one should be aware of the small marks left by the cutting blades and holding clamps on the job, and measures should be taken to remove or compensate for them.

Several manufacturers sell various models of hydraulic shear machines that accept a broad diversity of metal plate sizes. Metal cuts of different sizes can be applied, and often times the metal can be reused. The appearance of modern day hydraulic shears is not what you would expect of the typical shearing machines. They work quietly, housed in large, enclosed units.

Multiple sets of sharp blades used to cut the metal into various shapes and sizes, as per specifications, can be found inside of the machines. Looking at the compartment, it is difficult to believe the amount of pressure generated here to cut the metal. Since most are made for over-floor installation, current models of hydraulic shear machines can be repositioned as needed on the production floor.

One should be very careful while operating the shearing components of the hydraulic shear machines, despite the fact that the components are inside of the machines. The blades of the machine should be kept sharp in order to maximize efficiency and prevent off-cuts. Lubrication and cleanliness are vital to proper operation of the moving parts. In addition, it is essential that hydraulic fluid levels be checked and fluid be replenished as necessary.
