I See What You Mean a.k.a. "The Big Blue Bear in Denver"

By: Elizabeth Rector

I have been obsessed with I See What You Mean for awhile now, ever since he showed up on 14th Street peering into the Colorado Convention Center in downtown Denver. I am one of only a few who casually, and often, refers to him in conversation by his real name, rather than, ‘that big blue bear down by the convention center.’ I love him. The good news is I get to 'visit' with I See What You Mean almost everyday on my way home from work.

All things considered, you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that miniature replicas of the 40-foot bear are available for purchase at the Colorado Convention Center or the gift shop at the Denver Art Museum (DAM). I See What You Mean replicas come in two sizes: 5” and 8”, and I believe cost $12 and $18 respectively.

Here are some photos and a cool video that documents the making of I See What You Mean, which was designed by Denver artist Lawrence Argent:

The bear is one of many displays that are part of the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs’ Public Art Program. Under an adopted city ordinance, the city requires that capital improvement projects with construction and design budgets over $1,000,000 allocate 1% of the estimated construction budget for the acquisition of public art.

If you keep your eyes peeled you will see great examples of interesting public art all around town. The Public Art Program has put together the following guide to public art, which makes checking out and finding the art easy, as well as a great walking tour on the next warm and sunny day:

Some of my favorites include the Scottish Angus Cow and Calf located on the south side of the DAM Hamilton Building and the Gates Triangle Sculpture Park near 16th Street Mall and Wewatta Street.
