Identity Theft-A Personal Experience and What I Learned

By: Ben Needles

There are several articles on the internet these days that talk about Identity Theft. I was personally a victim twice, by having my wallet stolen. Once from a restaurant, and once from a store. The thief took only my wallet, which caused me not to notice, until I was about to pay for my meal, and my items. I have searched on the internet trying to come up with the best way to protect myself and my family. The only way I can find, is by having the knowledge to keep our identities safe.

Internet Tips
The internet is one of the most popular places for identity thieves. They used to be able to go through your garbage and find credit card slips, or credit card offers that you have thrown away. Now, they just have to click a button, and all of your personal information is available to them. You have to watch out for yourselves. Unless you are totally confident in a website (see that they have protection advertised, or see the lock icon in the bottom right hand corner of your browser) then it may be better to talk to someone over the phone, to place your order.

You can keep an eye out on your identity by looking through your credit report on a monthly basis. If you see something suspicious, even if it is just an inquiry, contact the merchant or credit bureau. One of the best things to remember, is if it sounds too good to be true, then it usually is. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish between the legitimate offerings and fraudulent ones. Always go with your gut.

If you feel something is not right, dont do it. Never give out your social security number, without out feeling 100% positive, it is for a legitimate reason.

Phone Tip
Thieves are still using the telephone to commit their crimes. With the Do Not Call Registry, it has cut down on telemarketing calls, but not necessarily fraudulent calls.

One of the best things I have learned, is that if someone calls you claiming to be from your bank, and needs you to verify your information with them, tell them you are in the middle of something, and will need to call them right back. (I have used my son needing to go to the potty, as an excuse). Ask them for the phone number, their name and extension. If they happen to give you this information, hang up with them, and call your bank directly. Ask if the information you received is being requested by them, and if not, throw the criminals information away. You have now simply avoided a scam!

Identity Theft Protection Insurance
Identity Theft Protection has become big business with insurance companies. There are several out there that will insure you against ID theft for a small fee. Depending on the amount you could lose, choose your policy wisely. Some offer to reimburse you for lost monies due to work, legal fees, phone calls, etc. Some offer you this protection, along with a personal assistant that will work with you to get your information correct again.

This can be a priceless service, if this ever happens to you. I think it is a small price to pay, for the piece of mind it entitles you to.

Just some things to think about. Stay safe, and protect your family!
