Illuminating Ad Design

A lot of times, pundits like myself will spout off at the mouth with sage advice about how amazing and utilitarian color printing is and it can solve all of your business woes (don’t fret, it still can). But we are far to often remiss in our duties and omit the basic ins and outs of how to effectively put it into action for your business. This can leave fledgling entrepreneurs and those new to print advertising a bit lost in the dark, fumbling around for the light switch.

To rectify this oversight, let me shed a little light on the basic info on a couple of the most common types of print marketing. That way you’ll be able to get your bearings and get your ad design off to a good start.

Brochure Printing- Above all, you want your business brochures to look professional. To achieve this, you’re going to want to use your space effectively without over crowding your brochure. Stick to my golden rule: leave at least 1/4th of your total page space empty and free of filler. Also ensure that you maintain consistent and even imagery throughout, but especially on your front page. Make sure that your using complimentary colors (time to break out that trusty color wheel you haven’t seen since your fifth grade art class) and make sure your colors don’t clash with the images you’ve chosen for your brochure. Lastly, make sure the images you’re using are of sufficient resolution to not end up blurry or grainy when they are transposed to the brochure.

Flyer Printing - Promotional flyer are the shock troopers of your marketing army, quick to deploy but packing a big punch. That being the case, it’s important not to overcomplicate your flyers. The majority of your flyer space should be taken up by your headline and your image (either one can lead the charge, really, though I tend to gravitate towards the headline first followed by the image method, myself). This is important, as you only have a matter of seconds to catch a readers attention and create enough curiosity to ensure that they finish reading the remainder of your flyer. That remainder is the real meat and potatoes of your ad, the offer itself, which is what’s going to sell you’re product once you’ve got the reader’s attention.

These are just a few tips to get you started and along your way. Much of the detail of your ads will be determined by your content and the specifics of your marketing message. Once you’ve got the basic groundwork of ad design figured out, though, you’ll be better able to experiment and really play around with the overall image you’re trying to project, instead of taking blind shots in the dark and hoping for the best.
