Know the Rules

"Every industry is full of them. No matter what kind of profession you’re in you’ll be confronted with them. The world of advertising and marketing tips is going to be no different.

Sit down with someone and ask them about marketing and I bet they’ll tell you what they view as the rules to being a great marketer. You hear the kinds of advertisements you should focus on depending on the medium as well as the kind of research you should do before you start making any of your marketing material.

But along with these marketing tips comes another piece of advice, and this one isn’t as easy to understand, and even harder to do right: be unique.

The rules, people so love to say, are made to be broken. Every time someone is told a rule a lot of people are going to be thinking of a way to do it better. Bucking the trend is a way to get noticed, and what else is marketing about? You want people to see you and hear the message you have to say, so why shouldn’t you be unique?

The answer is that you should do what you can to do something interesting, but if you don’t know why the rules were originally established you’ll find yourself breaking a rule that really shouldn’t be broken, and end up wasting money in the process.

If you’ve always been using brochures to try and reach a particular market someone might consider trying to vary it up, such as placing an ad in a magazine instead.

The issue you might run into is that the reason brochures were being used was because they worked, and the reason no one was buying magazine ads was because that particular market didn’t bother to read the magazines the ads are in.

There are plenty of occasions where the norm was established because the norm worked and sold what it needed to, whereas when you switch over into a new form you’ll find those sales plummeting rather than going up because you failed to realize that the rules didn’t need to be broken in this instance.

The point of this particular marketing tip isn’t to scare you away from trying something new, because there are plenty of new marketing ventures that worked wonders, but people who understood the industry and did the needed research before hand were the ones to develop them. They knew why the rules were what they were so that they could figure out the best way to change them.

The next time you have what seems like a great new idea take the time to do some research and determine if it hasn’t been used before because it isn’t the best way to reach your audience, or if it’s just because no one else has thought of it.
