LOST IN TRANSLATION

The cultures of the world have a lot of variations. It can begin with something as minor as a greeting and extend to the way you relate to the people. Cross cultural communication is an important skill. In as much as you have read guide books, it is important that you assume that you do not know anything. A person who comes to a group of people with a willing heart to learn is welcomed with open arms. But a person who is judgmental and presumptive is despised.
This is important for the traveler to know, do not assume that the way you relate to everyone in your country is the same way everyone around the world is going to relate to you.
Do not try and change people when you are a tourist, it is not your place to force change upon them, instead learn how they interact with their environment. Not everyone needs a microwave to have a meaningful life.
The customs and the traditions of a particular place are their pride and joy. Thus it might be offensive if you start to tell them that they are doing things the wrong way and your way is better. Remember these are the things that they were taught by their parents. To them it is not just a mindless pursuit of tradition. But their actions are an affirmation of their heritage and identity.
It is possible that some of their customs might be destructive but the use of force will not change things rather change can come through suggestion and long term commitment. This is not the job of a tourist but it needs people who know the environment well so that the change can be less confrontational and more constructive.
Thus as a tourist you should be aware that you are learning about other cultures but you are not trying to change them into a mini version of you. A cross cultural conversation takes place only when the views of everyone are respected, hence in order for the tourist to learn they have to assume that everything they know they do not know
