Laproscopy

By: Dr Paul Tofilau

Laproscopy....You've just been to see your gynaecologist or surgeon about your

problem. What does he/she recommend, a laparoscopy.
As always, you are tossed out of the room because he/she has to rush off to an

emergency or is terribly behind with their schedule and you are left

wandering. What is laparoscopy? What does that mean? What type of surgery and

incisions does that entail and the list of questions go on and on....

Well before you get too frustrasted, I have included below some of the common

reasons why your doctor may have suggested this procedure. These include

butmy name is Dr Paul Tofilau. I am a registered specialist Obstetrician &

Gynaecologist practicing in the state of Queensland, AUSTRALIA. not limited

to the following:

Pelvic Pain

Women often see there doctor because of pelvic pain associated with their

periods or pain during sexual intercourse which is affecting their

relationship. In some circumstances, pelvic pain can be associated with other

symptoms such as vaginal discharge, fever and feeling unwell are all classic

features of pelvic infection.

Iif these symptoms do not improve with antibiotic therapy, laparoscopy is

often necessary to assess what is happenning in the pelvis further. At times

, a pelvic abscess or collection of pus has formed which is why, the

antibiotics are not wortking. In this situation, the abscess is drained

laparoscopically and in doing so will allow the antibiotics to kill of the

rest of the infection after which, the patient will often make a remarkable

recovery.

Other Abdominal Pain

In both sexes, pain in the right lower abdomen associated with fever and

diarrhoea is often caused by appendicitis. If the patient presents early

enough, the appendix has not ruptured, or the diagnosis is uncertain, a

laproscopy is often performed as a preference over the old way of cutting the

abdomen. In some hospitals, laproscopy is not routinely done often because

they do not have the specialist staff to conduct the laproscopy. In those

places, the old way of openning the abdomen may have to be conducted.

These are only some of the few indications for performing a laproscopy......
