Life in glorious colour: Mauritius

By: Andrew Regan

As soon as you arrive in Mauritius, it won’t take long to realise that you’re in a place overflowing with colour and life that you’ll be desperate to plunge into.

There can be few better ways to start than by immersing yourself in its crystal seas. Blue Bay Beach, with sand as clear white as the surrounding sea is blue, serves this purpose perfectly - a sumptuous place to unwind. If you're looking to liven up in the water rather than simmer down, a day trip by speedboat to the Ile aux Cerfs should be on the agenda, where you can then snorkel and dive to your heart's content - there‘s lots to catch the eye under there. This is just one of a great variety of day trips available, and there are several more that cater to all tastes.

Time your visit well and you can see even more dazzling colours and activity on land as well as in the sea, by experiencing some of Mauritius' spectacular Hindu festivals. At the end of February, the Maha Shivratri festival honours the role of Lord Shiva in Hindu myth. As part of the celebrations, a brightly decorated wooden arc is carried to the volcanic Grand Bassin lake, near the Mare Aux Vacoas resevoir, where flowers and small lights are then set adrift across the water.

In addition to celebrating Shiva, the festival of Thaipoosam Cavadee in January allows Hindu worshippers to celebrate Lord Subramaniam, the Son of Shiva. These worshippers, though, show their devotion in a very different way - by decorating themselves with all kinds of unusual and impressive body piercings. Some have to be seen to be believed!

If you're not lucky enough to catch either of these, then the daily Teemeedee festival is a feast for your eyes, if not for its devotees – fasting is part of the ritual of proving their Tamil faith, as well as walking across pits of fire, encouraged by the large crowds that flock to watch.

But if you prefer to keep yourself more nourished than the Teemeedee devotees, you will probably think that Mauritius’ choice of exotic cuisine is worth walking over embers to sample itself. The Grand Baie area offers a plenitude of restaurants and bars, serving up delicious Creole food and colourful cocktails. And even after dark, the area's vibrant social scene illuminates the evenings - with Lord Shiva often depicted as "The Lord of the Dance", it seems appropriate to dance long into the night in the area's lively nightclubs.

A world away it may seem now, but the range of flights to Mauritius available from the UK and beyond can make it much closer than you might think. From the UK alone, several flights each week depart for Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, which is within easy reach of Mauritius' capital, Port Louis. Once you‘ve arrived safely, many more voyages of discovery await you - transporting you into vibrant worlds that all your senses will enjoy.
