Missing Data or Program Settings After You Upgrade to Windows XP

By: Joshaf Smith

There is a common symptom seen whenever you try to upgrade your operating system to Windows XP, either your system hangs or you encounter some error messages like:
“Setup has encountered an error while creating an account for user name.
This user’s settings will be lost.”
This error message is displayed at the end of setup. After this if you search for the data saved in user profile folder, you will discover that the data is not there or inaccessible as it was before the upgrade. This may include Start menu shortcuts, items in the Startup folder, items in your Desktop folder, e-mail messages, or documents, pictures, or music files that are stored in the My Documents folder.
If further you choose to skip the step and continue to install Windows in Get Updated Setup Files dialog box and click on ‘no’, then you will get same message again where as if you go for ‘yes’ option , you may receive another message:
“Provide compatible names
Setup has suggested new names for you.
Names that have special characters, are too long, or have a special meaning in Windows are considered incompatible and must be changed.
Setup has suggested new names for you. To accept the suggested names and continue setup, click Next. To change a name, select it, and then click Change.”
Note: The above message is there if you have Windows ME or 98 on your computer system before upgrade or otherwise some other message related to exceed of files form max characters is encountered.
And further search for the same data loss will give you no useful results as the data is still missing.
The reason for this problem can be any of the following:
1. If before up gradation Windows ME or 98 was installed then the problem may be due to ending of user name with a period (.)
2. If some other file version of Windows was there then this may be due to exceed of files that were stored in a folder structure from MAX_PATH (256 characters)
So Microsoft has found the solution of this problem accordingly. In both the case you first need to click on ‘Yes’ to download the updated Setup files (Recommended) in the Get Updated Setup Files dialog box during Setup. Then after in case of Windows ME or 98, click ‘Next’ and change the name according to compatible name suggested. While otherwise you need to rename the files that are not accessible.
Now if after following the above steps your useful data is still missing you need not to worry about the same as various software are available that will help you to recover this situation too and are termed as Windows Recovery Software. data recovery software are found to be very efficient to recover your lost data in any case.
