Niche Marketing on a Small Budget

By: Jim Atkinson

Many people think that the best marketing is to be in front of as many people as possible. While this may be true to an extent, it is also very expensive. For those that are on a budget, read on…

It would be nice to advertise a full page ad in the local newspaper everyday or have a series of 30 second commercials airing daily, but it gets very expensive. For the small business owner, realtor, insurance salesperson and others, it just doesn’t make sense. These entrepreneurs need to make their marketing budget stretch for maximum effectiveness.

There are many different avenues to get your message across, but the most effective is to focus your marketing like a laser beam to target your most likely customers, your natural market. Your “natural market” is the customers that are most likely to use your services.

Follow these four steps to help start your marketing plan.

1. Write down your natural target market.
Who does your product or service benefit most?
Where do they live? How far are they from your place of business?

2. Think about what they want and need.
What is the most desired feature of your product or service?
Why would they want your product or service?

3. How do they find out about your service?
How will your potential customer find out about you? Referrals? Advertising? Drive by? Luck? For most it will be a concentrated marketing plan that involves advertising.

4. Spend money where your target market is looking.
Demographics dictate advertising mediums. Seniors read newspapers, while many baby boomers & Gen Xers use the Internet. Home buyers and sellers start their search on the Internet. If your product or service requires research or comparisons, consider Internet marketing.

By following these 4 easy steps, you will start to focus your marketing and get better results. There are many different mediums to market to your clients, including postcards, newspaper ads, direct mail, and websites. For those on a budget, the most effective will be web based. One of the most cost effective Internet advertising mediums is to partner with a website that caters to your natural market. (See number 1 above) Look to advertise on a website that can offer your clients value. If the website offers value, people will use it and your product or service will be seen. This helps to maximize the exposure of your marketing dollar and increase your profits.
