Old Fashioned Ways to Attract Customers

By: karen grahams

As a small business, any technique that attracts customers is a good one. Every single customer that comes through your doors is important. For many small businesses, they are just one or two customers a day from being forced to close their doors permanently.

With that being said, it is important to utilize every tool available to you to maximize your advertising efforts. Far too many small businesses focus all of their efforts on the internet and other new methods of advertising. Be careful not to neglect the old fashioned methods.

Postcards
Like all direct mailings, postcards just feel old fashioned. But they can still be remarkable effective, for a variety of reasons. For one thing, postcards are read far more often than regular pieces of mail. Recipients are much more likely to look over a postcard than they are a regularly packaged letter. Also, postcards are quite cheap, and they make it quite easy to say exactly what you want your customers to know.

Posters
In many ways, posters have become less common than they were just a few years ago. However, you can still find them around, and that is because they can still work. A well designed poster printing can generate a number of new customers. There are two keys to making a poster printing work. First, it has to be well designed and made to target the people who are most likely to use your business. Secondly, you have to place your posters in the right locations. Place them in areas where your target customers most often spend their time. Putting posters in areas where few of your target customers visit is a waste of time and money.

Brochures
Brochures are still common, and that is because they are still cost effective advertising tools. Designing and printing brochures that effectively reach your target market can still be tremendous for you profit margins. The key, again, is to design the properly and hand them to the right people. Once you find the right people, of course, hand out as many as you possibly can.

Business Cards
Virtually every businessperson has business cards. Make sure you are not the exception. Have some quality business cards printed up that you can hand out to every person you meet. By quality, I mean this: do not pick up generic business card paper from your local department store and expect it to suffice. Customers know quality when they see it, and cheap paper certainly does not express quality. Invest in a quality set of paper and, if you can afford it, find a good commercial printer to handle the printing. Most commercial printers are not terribly expensive (even the good ones) so you can usually go with one of them and be happy with your business cards.
