Pistachios as a Hostess Gift? That’s Just Nuts!

By: Galvin Nussingten

Have you ever wished for a novel idea for a hostess gift? Consider gifting your hostess with a decorative tin or a fancy container filled with pistachio nuts. What a unique idea! Just about everyone enjoys pistachios and many people consider them a special treat.

Some will argue that a bottle of wine is the perfect hostess gift, but I disagree. Unless you personally know the host’s wine preference, I suggest you steer away from wine. You never know who may wish to avoid alcohol for religious or health reasons. Also, the whole family can enjoy the pistachios, not just the adults.

Others claim you should take some flowers, a lovely choice, except that they require the hostess to stop what she is doing, find an appropriate vase to put them in, and then find someplace to display them.

Well, what about chocolate? Won’t that make a nice hostess gift? It could, unless the hostess is on a diet or avoiding sugar, and then you have the milk chocolate or dark chocolate preference question.

Pistachios are the perfect choice. In addition to being a unique and tasty gift, they are very nutritious. Pistachios are loaded with nutrients such as antioxidants, vitamin B6, lutein, phytosterols, fiber, protein, and are high in the “good” fats. They are low in saturated fat and contain many vitamins. Studies show a handful or two (containing one and a half to three ounces of pistachios) each day can reduce cholesterol levels and have a positive effect on heart health. One recent study conducted at Pennsylvania State University indicates that pistachios may also help reduce high blood pressure.

One ounce of shelled pistachios has about 43 to 49 kernels containing approximately 170 calories. Pistachio nuts in the shell combat mindless eating because of the effort required to extract them from their shells. Therefore, these nuts can be a healthy addition to any diet. Clearly, the more you learn about these scrumptious little nuts, the more there is to like about them.

In addition to giving pistachio nuts as a hostess gift, I buy roasted pistachios in bulk during the winter holidays to make inexpensive gifts for friends and neighbors. I fill a clear treat bag with the nuts, fold the top down and staple on a festive greeting card that I personalize on my computer. These tasty treat bags are easy to keep on hand in case someone unexpected drops by with a gift for you. You can immediately reciprocate and the recipient will think you are so thoughtful to have remembered them too.

Be sure to buy extra roasted pistachios; you will want some for yourself. The last thing you want to have happen is for you to eat all of the nuts you were going to use for gifts, only to have to use that stashed that bottle of “Two Buck Chuck” wine someone brought you as a hostess gift.
