Special Features of Hydraulic Press Brakes

Hydraulic press brakes move in response to the fluid pressure on a piston and are more flexible and have greater capacity than the mechanical press brakes. Since the piston is operated by the pressurized fluid, the hydraulic press can be programmed to have different strokes for different operations and even different speeds within a stroke. Stroke lengths to the extent of 250 cm or 100 in can be easily obtained in hydraulic press brakes depending upon the length of the cylinder. The number of strokes can be as high as 600 per minute, as in the case of the high-speed blanking operation.

There are three main types of hydraulic press brakes: conventional, NC, and CNC. In the conventional machines, the stroke length and speed are adjusted manually as per the requirements and the knowledge of the operator. The NC hydraulic press brakes are fitted with the NC controllers, which feeds through the program that controls the various parameters of the machine. With NC machines the setup time is reduced and they offer speedy stroke cycles for all jobs. Thus they are very suitable for repetitive tasks. The CNC hydraulic press brakes are operated completely by the program fed into the computer. To change the various parameters as per the requirements, all you have to do is change the program and you are ready to perform bulk pressing operations.

While mechanical press brakes are available up to a maximum capacity of around 18,000 tons, the hydraulic press brakes have a maximum capacity of 50,000 tons for operation in the United States. Hydraulic press brakes can have multiple cylinders, thus the programmed load can be applied to the main ram while separate force and timing can be used on the blank holder.

Since the number of the rotating components within the hydraulic press brake is minimized, it requires less maintenance. The hydraulic fluid circulating through the machine also acts as a lubricant. Thus the machine is always well lubricated, which reduces the wear and tear between the various moving components and further reduces the maintenance time and costs.

The frame of present day hydraulic press is made from welded steel that has high strength and rigidity, reducing the vibrations within the machine. The overall noise of the hydraulic press brake is less, and stepless adjustment of the working pressure is available.

There are only three sliding parts within the hydraulic press brake: the piston, cylinder, and guide ways. All these components are treated with highly wear-and-tear resistant materials. Abundant lubrication by the hydraulic fluids further reduces their wear and tear.

On the top of the tools of the hydraulic press brake, slanting wedges are installed. It is very easy to control the accuracy of the job to be pressed manually by adjusting these wedges. The stroke of the piston can be adjusted with the help of the electric motor or by the hand wheel. The length of the stroke can be read on the indicator.

The modern day hydraulic press brake comes with safety guards, thus the operators can work without worrying about their safety. The overall high capacity and flexible adjustments availed by the hydraulic press brakes, coupled with their low maintenance, have made them popular with most modern day machine shops and factories.
