Staffing In The Skilled Trades

By: Lloyd Mills

A few short years ago if you were looking for an electrician or plumber or

any other skilled tradesman it was just a matter of calling the local times

and placing an add in the classified, and in a few days . . . presto . . .

a line of qualified men and women would appear at your door waiting to

compete for the opportunity. The problem now isn't that the line doesn't

appear but in contrast that it doesn't stop growing, and with all the

potential candidates how do you effectively eliminate those who are less than

qualified without eliminating the potential "great ones." There are many on-

line job listings and resume posting services, just type "job" or "career"

into any search engine, and this is a terrific way to fill the rank and file

positions, but there are a finite number of highly skilled tradespeople that

are extremely difficult to locate within the masses. Professional staffing

services are a valid option, although the high cost can put a strain on your

labor burden, and pushes your overall job costing up. Hiring someone who is

admittedly under qualified and training them is fine if they don't leave as

soon as they reach there peak.

The truth is there is no effective way to recruit only those who are in the

top 1 or 2 % of there trade. You can leave the responsibility of being found

on the prospective employee, and those in the top of there field know how to

be found. Many will post adds of there own in print and on-line stating what

they have to offer and what they want in return eliminating all of the cost

to the potential employer and giving a firm example of their own initiative.

It may be hard to find an electrician that can run a cost effective job, but

a highly skilled electrician that brings his own work with his own

professional contacts and unique set of prospecting skills that you can build

a business around has to find you.
