Super DLT tape SDLT Technology

By: Tape4backup

SuperDLT S-DLT tape technology is the next generation DLT backup storage media tape technology platform. Super-DLT backup storage media tape technology is based on LGMR Laser Guided Magnetic Recording technology. The LGMR uses a unique combination of the best magnetic and optical technologies to dramatically increase the number of recording tracks on the data bearing surface of the media.

The SDLT is the next generation of products from Quantum. The initial version of SDLT is similar to LTO Ultrium with a native capacity of 110GB and a native data transfer rate of 11MB/sec for SDLT. The LTO Ultrium has a native capacity of 100GB and a native transfer rate of 15MB/sec.
SDLT is one of the most significant of the new formats of the next generation of Digital Linear Tape DLT. Drives based on Super DLT technology will far exceed the 35GB native capacity of the DLT tape IV format, with which it aims to be backwards compatible. The LGMR Laser Guided Magnetic Recording technique has been introduced in Super DLT which is a combination of optical and magnetic recording techniques. With the help of LGMR, Super DLT uses lasers to more precisely align the recording heads. At the core of LGMR is an optically assisted servo system referred to as Pivoting Optical Servo POS. The Pivoting Optical Servo POS combines high density magnetic write/read data recording with laser servo guiding. It is designed for high duty cycle applications. The Pivoting Optical Servo has a much lower sensitivity to external influences. The POS provides more track density, which is probably not possible with other tape systems. The POS system decreases the manufacturing costs. The POS eliminates the need for pre-formatting the tape. By deploying the optical servo on the unused backside of the media, 10% to 20% more capacity is gained. In this way the entire recording surface is made available for actual data.
The optical tracking laser follows along on the backside of the media as the media moves through the POS. Therefore, the media tracks the embedded optical targets. The POS assembly pivots around a single mounting point to keep the magnetic read/write heads aligned with the optical tracks and reading data from or writing data to the tape.

An advanced form of the Partial Response Maximum Likelihood PRML has been introduced. This technique is usually more associated with hard disk drives than to the LTO linear tape technology. In this way the capacity and data transfer rate increases by providing high encoding efficiency recording densities. The benefits of POS are that no media pre-formatting is required and 100% of the tape is now available for data recording

HP SDLT storage media is ideally suited for departmental backups and data centre where performance, capacity and cost are critical. SDLT technology offers up to 160 GB of storage capacity and a 16MB/sec sustained data transfer rate (native mode).
2nd generation Super DLT II 600GB Data Cartridge offers high capacity and low cost per GB for customers with prior investments in DLT backup technology. Super DLTtape II cartridges support DLTSage for improved media and drive diagnostics.
 High-performance: up to 32MB/sec compressed transfer rate
 Comprehensive: read-backwards compatible with DLTtape
 High-capacity: supports capacities up to 320GB
 Reliable: combines the best of proven optical and magnetic technologies to offer users improvements in capacity and performance
 HP SDLT cleaning cartridges: provide 20 cleans
 With 600GB capacity and 72MB/sec transfer rate, HP SDLT II 600GB Data Cartridges offer high capacity and low cost per GB for customers with prior investments in DLT backup technology.
 Super DLTtape II uses a new Super PET (S-PET) base film enabling an overall thickness reduction of 10%. This results in a longer tape with more capacity versus a Super DLTtape I cartridge.
 Optical servo guide information is coded on the rear of the media, increasing the number of recording tracks on the data-bearing media surface. This enables higher capacity tape cartridges like Super DLT II.
