Wisely Choosing Your Online Business

By: Arla Bornhoft

The Home Based Business industry is really still in it's infancy. Despite that fact, there are so many options to choose from it's overwhelming. What should you look for in an online or home business? Certainly it's not a complex compensation plan requiring an extensive down line who rely on you to keep them motivated. This will hone your leadership skills, but also cause sanity loss. Here are some helpful questions to ask when looking at an online or home based business:

1. How expensive is it to get into this business? It shouldn't tens of thousands to get into it. However, most businesses that don't require much also don't have a lucrative compensation plan. 2. Do you need to add another room to your house to do contain inventory for this business? If yes, can you afford that? The best businesses no longer require a home inventory. You are not starting a brick and mortar business. Most companies hold their products in their facilities until it is ordered directly from the customers you sign up. A few information or software companies do everything online. This is the most efficient model for the Information Age.

3. Does the company have integrity? This should be high on your list. One company I stumbled upon had morphed from another company, questionably copying the other's business model and concept. In my research, I discovered that the new company had desperately inferior training, no live support, and a lot of fluff. While their promotion video was fabulous, their ethics were lacking. Businesses with questionable ethics often do not last and all your hard work will go down the drain if that business goes under. Integrity is essential!

4. How much time will it require? Initially you will spend extra time getting product training, learning the mechanics, setting up your accounts, etc. Even when it is an easy system, it will still require some TLC.

5. How long will it take to make some green? Many businesses out there allow you to "earn while you learn". Look for at least 75% of the upfront commission when you make a sale. If not, then you are doing all the work and the company is making all the money and it's not worth your time - there are better fish in the sea. 6. How available is the help you need? Can you speak to the owners? If you can't speak with the owners or the corporate office, forget it. Know who you are doing business with before you start. Many places online have no live support services and it can take days to get the answers you need.

7. Is this a business you can be commit to long term? Jumping program to program depletes your focus causing those under you to lose trust or leave them feeling burned. Many "gurus" will want to get you to change into their business because they know you have an entrepreneurial side. But program jumping often does more harm to you and others than it does good. If you pick the right business with superior training and a lucrative comp plan you won't feel the need abandon ship!

8. Finally, ask yourself if this business fits in with your long term goals. Often you can find a business that will actually help you gain your other long term desires, as well as your monetary goals. The business that I am involved with has taught me skills that have helped me have increased success in numerous areas of life. In fact, some of my dreams are coming to fruition partly due to the business training I received! That is a true blessing that I was not expecting.

9. When you called the person owning the web site were they friendly and available for you? Did they call back promptly? Ask them what else they promote to get a feel for if they are spread out or available for helping you.

10. Does this business fit in with your long term goals? Often you can find a business that will actually help you gain your other long term desires, as well as your monetary goals. The business that I am involved with has taught me skills that have increased my success in other areas of life. In fact, some of my dreams are happening partly due to the business training I received.

11. What previous knowledge, if any, does this business require? Does the company provide good quality training for members who do NOT have previous experience? The training should include product training, business skills, and show the member how to think like a successful business owner. Since most people think within the framework of an employee, not an owner, this type of training is critical for success.
