World time servers

By: shipra kaul

The Network time Protocol (NTP) helps us to determine world time accurately. Time servers are able to accurately tell the time as they receive accurate feedback of time from GPS satellites and the radio atomic clock in Colorado. The NTP time servers do not rely on local networks or radio waves to accurately provide time.
Reference clocks
Worldwide time rely mainly on time servers set as referees so that local networks refer to these servers for accurate time. Reference clocks are usually set up on networks that are well secure and monitored. Reference clocks are selected to fit with the type of network in that place. Reference clocks are expensive to buy and install. Most reference clocks use long wave radio signals to correct time. Other also includes GPS transmissions. Those that use GPS transmissions are much cheaper and provide accurate time within few seconds. Installing these clocks may involve the mounting of the GPS receiver o n roof topes. IF mounted indoor or in shielded rooms the clock may fail to give client time. When operating a time network it is advised that you have at least three different time sources in case any of them fails.
Local are clocks may not be useful to use as referees as due to low network reception the time may wander and deviate from the international time. Local time always deviates slowly from the UTC. NTP is the best way of accurately referring time to local networks. NTP is able to maintain high levels of accuracy in time.NTP lso provide much improved security of data. NTP infrastructures are easy to setup and implement. These make them compatible for both small businesses and vast enterprises. The clock synchronization achieved by NTP can be useful for many purposes including enabling easier networking and security.
The Network time Protocol (NTP) is also used as a client server or a client even both in some instances. Accurately time recordings may be obtained from one or more servers. Usually an ATP client may have many servers which may include broadcast and none broadcast servers. It is important to note that the client servers are to be as independent as possible. A server will be used as a time reference source only if it meets the level of accuracy. If a server wanders the accurate time accuracy can be determined by consulting other servers. Therefore a server may note fail out of the range of accuracy if it is surrounded by other servers.
