Would you save a person’s life if you had the power to?

By: DanTheMan

Probably almost everyone would give an affirmative answer to that question. After all why would we want to let someone die if we have the power to help them live. But the popular opinion is that not everyone is gifted with that power. People assume that it is a privileged few who have the power to save someone else’s life.

This might come as a shock to you, but you really do have the power to save someone in this world. In fact each one of us has the power to save at least one other human being in this world from perishing. But before we jump to conclusions about that statement, let us get some things straight here. Perishing does not have to mean just ceasing to live. It can also mean slowly dying away, merely existing or generally living well below human standards. One would be amazed to know how many people in this world live everyday of their lives in this wretched condition. Without food, without proper clothing, lacking a roof over their heads and with no hope for the future, they just exist till they draw their last breath. Generation after generation, they live this kind of existence, knowing no other way to live.

So helping a person to live does not only mean preventing them from dying, but it also adds on the responsibility of ensuring that they live a meaningful, fulfilling life that is a blessing to them as well as to others around them. It is this realm in which we can really help people. Most people in this world do not know that there are other people suffering in this manner. They live in a comfort zone, oblivious to the conditions of a hurting world. Their lifestyle safely shields them from the harsh realities of this world. Others are vaguely aware of these realities, but hesitate to step out of their world to meet the needs of others.

What is it that really prevents most of us from reaching out to others? Why do a lot of us turn the other way when confronted with a real need that we could meet? Well, there could be a lot of reasons for it, but one of the main reasons is ignorance. Many people do not know how to help. They simply do not know what is required of them. They think they need to go out of their way in order to help others. They fear that somehow their normal lives would be disrupted by their willingness to reach out.

But these are unwarranted fears. In fact once we realize how easy it is to help someone live a better life, we would start to wonder why we didn’t start doing this much earlier. When something so simple can have such a dramatic impact on another person’s life, it is worth considering the matter.

Each one of us has different assets with which we can help others. Some of us have money, some have time, some have a word of encouragement and still others, an aptitude for service. Each one of us has something that we can share with others that would make a dramatic impact upon their lives.

Every farmer knows that to reap a good harvest, he needs to sow first. When he sows well, he can be confident of a good harvest. This same law of sowing and reaping can also work powerfully in our lives. When we sow our time, talents, and money in the lives of others who need them desperately, we will reap an abundant harvest in our own lives in the form of our own needs being met in dramatic ways. A seed is one of the most powerful entities in this world. Once it is sown, it can even split a rock and push its way through as it grows.

When we help others, we can expect our own needs to be met from a supernatural source. Many people’s deepest needs are never met because they never bother to sow. They live in a cocoon and never reach out to others. They fear that they would lose even what they’ve got if they give to others. But a farmer who fears that he would lose his seeds and never sows, can never ever hope to get a harvest. To reap, he simply has to sow. You just cannot change the rules however counterintuitive the rules might seem. Sowing and reaping go hand in hand. In order to reap, one must sow.

But this is a win-win situation. When we sow, not only do the needs of the people we help get met, our needs are met as well. When we open up, we not only let go, we also receive. Just like we exhale and then inhale, we give and we receive. One can’t happen without the other. For a more meaningful life, we need to reach out. Then life becomes truly enjoyable; for them, as well as for us!
